A Greensboro Quinceanera

Michelle| January 2017

One of the most important celebrations in Mexican culture is the tradition of the Quinceanera. This special moment in life constitutes a ceremony on a girl's fifteenth birthday to mark her passage to womanhood, to give thanks for blessings, and to present a young woman to the community.

Social Conceptions had the honor of planning Michelle’s Quinceanera which was held at the Oak Branch Conference Center. Digital 33 photographed this significant event for Michelle and her family. Michelle wore a fun, gorgeous teal floor-length gown with sequin bodice and ruffled-filled skirt.

Tables were dressed in silver linens, silver plates, and teal napkins. Each table also had a glass vase centerpiece filled with white long-stem roses. Culinary Visions provided a delicious meal for Michelle’s family and friends. Dessert for the event was a beautiful DIY cake provided by Michelle’s family. The three-tier cake was solid white with teal accents.

As guests arrived, they mingled, but then took their seats before the blessing of the food. After family and friends enjoyed their meal, the last doll ritual took place with Michelle’s cousin, Selina. The last doll ritual is a tradition of the Quinceanera ceremony. Receiving a last doll is receiving your last childhood gift. After the last doll ritual, the candle lighting ceremony took place. Traditionally, the birthday girl has a court that consists of seven girls and seven boys. Each person is to light one candle and the birthday girl's parents light either the first or last candle. Alternatively, the birthday girl chooses fifteen people or family members with whom she has a close relationship to light the candles.

Following the candle lighting ceremony, was the mannequin surprise challenge. All guests were to freeze and not move during the song until the videographer captured everyone’s statue. After this fun surprise, the event entered into the waltz with chambelanes. The Quinceañera chambelans, birthday girl’s escorts dance with the birthday girl. After the waltz, the changing of the shoes ceremony took place which is when a girl typically changes from flats to heels to signify the entrance into womanhood. Michelle was then crowned by her grandmother. More dancing took place, along with the cutting of the cake, and lastly…everyone joined together to sing Happy Birthday to Michelle.
